Hygienists are always in great demand. They normally work on a session basis as there are few practices which employ a full-time hygienist and they are therefore usually normally self-employed.

Their are both permanent and locum positions available, but only hygienists qualified in the U.K. are permitted to work in the U.K. Hygienists from overseas may of course work as dental nurses or other such positions.

As far as dental surgeries are concerned they can be loosely grouped under the following types :

• Private /Independent
• Mixed (i.e. National Health and Private)
