Plenty of these around in this town. Not only superb news for the social life, but also for work opportunities. This can obviously involve long and late hours and dealing with patrons that have had one or two too many. Closing times at regular bars and pubs are 11:00 pm from Monday to Saturday and 10:30 pm on Sundays. Nightclubs may have late licence's, though, and you would be required to work later.

Managerial jobs can be live-in, especially out in the country. Bar jobs generally include serving customers and collecting glasses and may include a dash of admin, such as stock counts and ordering stock.

Pick up a copy of the TNT magazine (available Monday mornings free of charge outside most tube stations) and scan the adverts and classifieds towards the back for jobs available. Otherwise, knock on a few doors of the pubs in your area and this should produce a few leads. You could also approach a specialised bar and catering recruitment agency, especially if you are looking for function work.

Qualifications/attributes

Experience is a bonus, but at the end of the day enthusiasm and friendliness carry a lot of weight. Bar tricks and knowledge of cocktail ingredients may be important for a trendy cocktail bar, but being able to ‘pull a good pint' will suffice for your run-of-the-mill pub.

Working Hours

Much of this will depend on your willingness to work ‘fill in' shifts and your relationship with the other bar and managerial staff. Generally, though, the hours are flexible and you could do bar work to supplement another income. Only nightclubs will stay open after 11 pm due to the UK drinking regulations, so this will curb the late shifts.

Pay

£ 3.50 - £ 5 per hour. This may include a few meals and drinks, especially if the position is live-in. Remember to check out the tips policy although, alas, tipping bar staff is not the norm in the UK, especially in the more traditional pubs. You stand a better chance in the trendier cocktail and wine bars of the city where the clientele are more affluent and the money flows more freely.
